It's so awesome to have Erin back - I'm so glad she's feeling better!
This week:
We worked a lot on belt, adding "everybody's favorite" to our vocal exercises. We're trying to get the small place in Erin's high voice called "bite" - a place that lets you hit high notes safely without them sounding shouted or shrill.
We vocalized on: Humming, Lip buzz, Hooty, oh-ah, me-me, yah-yah, me-eee, yah-ahhh
We worked on:
- The pop sound of falling forward and keeping it light and quick in the verses (the "dumb" sound)
- Finding the difference between what it feels like and what it sounds like - knowing that we have to exaggerate it 3 times as much to make it sound like what we think it does.
- Our "Darla" placement in the choruses. Making sure that the sound comes forward and stays in a "pop" place - rather than falling back, even to a more classical place in our voice.
- Finding style in our voice in places other than vibrato.
- Finding style in the staccato, the forward-heavy, the breath...
Things to remember:
- Don't forget to talk talk talk! The default right now is a place farther back then we want - we have to constantly remind ourselves to bring our voices forward with talking!
- Smile! Especially in our "darla" placement to get that bite!
