Today Tatum learned a new part of our forward placement: the over the waterfall, lift part.
* The place the back of your mouth goes when you yawn - is where we want the back of your mouth to go when we're singing. It's called lifting our soft pallet. When we lift our soft pallet it makes us sound brighter/happier and helps us control our pitch even more. It's also where our "smile from your molars - not just smile by showing your teeth" placement comes from.
By adding this lift, we'll start to mix our conversational place (last week) and our lift/ bite placement (this week) to make our truer/brighter singing sound (next week with song 2).
Because she's improving so rapidly - she is totally getting it in her mind - now it's just a matter of practice in order for her voice to use our placement as a default. That only comes from sheer singing hours. She's doing so well - we're having a blast!
This week:
We vocalized on: humming, lip buzz, humming-lip buzz, wah-wah, oh-ah, hi my name is Tatum, nah-nah
-- We added a musical theater placement/belt exercise with wah-wah
-- We added a double time exercise
-- We really worked on range.
We worked on:
Our lift placement.
-- getting more comfortable with our conversational place
-- learning the difference between forward and lifted and forward (forward vs. bright)
-- learning the difference between our forced placement (first week) and our conversational placement.
-- learning the difference between being forward and being loud, learning volume control while maintaining the placement
Things to remember:
- up over the top
- keep it conversational
- relax! It feels like less than you think it does!
Before ---> End of today's lesson:
Awesome job today Tatum! Keep up the great work!
** Next week is new song week! You can bring whatever song you want!
If you need some ideas - here are some suggestions that i think you would sound awesome on!
Musical Theater:
- Part of your world (Little Mermaid)
- Journey to the Past (Anistasia)
- Popular (Wicked)
- Somewhere out there (An American Tale)
- I know it's today (Shrek the musical)
Any disney song would be great to work on musical theater technique as well - if there's one you like better!
