This week we did our first pop song!!!
We worked on: keeping it punchy, singing through our "pop box", thinning out Olivia's chords, and scats! We had a busy week!
Keeping it punchy:
In pop music it's really important to keep up with the music - or "stay in the pocket". In order to do this, we have to shorten our words to the point where we barely finish the words (and sometimes don't finish them at all). We have to quicken the way we sing things and emphasize the consonants to further commercialize the sound as well!
Thinning out Olivia's chords:
Speeding things up sounds like a pretty simple process - but it's not. The way that our chords are built naturally is in a way built for talking - and we don't talk quickly all the time. With every other type of music, you don't notice the thickness of your chords as much because you don't have to maneuver your voice like you do in pop music. Without thinning out (or speeding up) Olivia's chords - it would sound like she was singing through molasses - like she just can't quite keep up.
We started the thinning process today with scat exercises!
Scat exercises:
Scat exercises are like cardio for your vocal chords! We fit a whole bunch of notes into a very short amount of time to train her voice to move faster! She did so so great!!
All three of these things are extremely hard on their own - we will be working on these for the next few weeks with this song!
