With this new song, Grenade by Bruno Mars, Olivia wanted to continue our bluesy feel - but apply it to something a little faster.
Because of this, we worked on our pop box and adding depth to a very poppy placement, and continued to work on the vocal production and style of the song.
Pop box:
Because this song is a lot more pop than Adele - we have to take all of the bluesy things we did with our adele song, and squish them into a little box - singing more through our teeth, keeping more of the high end, losing the low end on the quick parts of the song to avoid muddiness, and still grabbing depth by biting our belt and pronouncing our words in a slightly more bluesy way than we would on a typical pop song.
Adding depth to that:
Because pop is supposed to be very squeaky (or not have much depth) so that you can sing in the pocket (or maintain the speed and scats of the song) - adding depth to that is a little bit difficult. We're training Olivia's voice to find depth without slowing her chords down. We do this by widening her vowels, aiming the sound a bit more diagonally than forward so that it is a less chipmunk feel and more of a chewing her words feel. We also bring the jaw up so that she's barely opening her mouth except for her big, long notes. This brings a dynamic to the song that makes it sound more stylized and on purpose - it adds a bit more polish.
