Lily Shaeffer: Wrecking Ball (week 2)

This week:

We vocalized on:

We worked on:
Mix voice, pinocchio voice, high belt - wideness (widening vowels) , following through the notes util the end and not letting them drop off, pop box in our chorus - making sure it doesn't fall back at all,

Mix voice:
The place between our big-low notes (belt voice), and our high high notes (head voice), is called our mix voice. Our mix voice helps us smooth the transition between belt and head voice, and allows us to add power to high notes without hurting our voice. Today we started building Lily's mix voice! We did this by using our "Pinnochio placement" - I had her talk like the character from Shrek, who talks in an extremely high voice - without making his voice thin or soft. We will continue to build this in our vocalizing exercises!

High Belt:
In a song like wrecking ball - we use what's called "high belt". It's the highest, most powerful part of our voice! The tendency when trying to sing high belt is to fall back into your throat - making it sound a little muffled - thinking that in the process you're protecting your voice from the power you're putting behind it. This is 100% wrong. The way to protect your voice with high belt is to sing in the correct placement. By using our forward, relaxed placement - we're building Lily's high belt in such a way that it becomes powerful and sounds clear and bright. We're bringing her high belt out of her throat to a forward place that she can control better, that will make it easier for her to transition into and out of with higher or lower notes, and will be easier to add in that awesome natural style that she has!

Following through the notes until the end:
You'll see Lily extending her arms throughout her song - reminding her to follow her placement all the way through her words, making sure that she doesn't revert back to what comes more naturally half way through a word.

Pop box in our chorus:
In lessons down the road we'll explore our "pop box" in more detail. But, for today, Lily learned part of this extension of our regular placement - taking our regular forward sound and exaggerating the more chipmunk part of it as a filter that we put our high pop songs through. Like i said, we'll explore this more later - but today she got an awesome taste of it!

Wow. She did so great!!! Our goal for week 1 is to make her feel her voice in a different way than she ever has before. Our goal for week 2 is to make this weird place feel and sound a LITTLE bit more natural. She nailed it!

Here are our videos from today!

Before/End of our lesson:

Great job Lily!! See you next week!
