Abbie Speed: Somewhere (week 1)

This week:

We vocalized on:
Mah-mah, be-be, nay-yay
We worked on:
1. Texturizing our pop box placement
2. Shelving - switching between chest and head

Texturizing our pop box placement
Today we worked on texturizing our song - taking our placement to extreme places to enhance the style and more relaxed nature of our song. We widened our vowels and softened our pronunciation (throwing away the end of our words), changing how each word flows into the next - giving the song a slightly lazier/simpler sound. We cut out any harsh consonant or vowel - widening vowels by putting "Ah" in our "i"s, and softening the consonants at the end of our words.
Adding texture to our songs is what will take it from sounding pretty to sounding cool and original - giving Abbie the ability to customize her songs more and more so that they each sound different.

Shelving - switching between chest and head
We also worked on shelving - a style technique where we switch between our chest voice and our mix voice with a deliberate cracking sound. (This technique is used a lot in yodeling and common in country music - giving the song a "whine" feel) In order to do this, we have to switch up the pressure on our vocal chords as we switch registers - making sure that when we do switch - that our placement doesn't fall back (making our head voice sound thin).
The biggest part of shelving that we have to master is staying forward through the switch - pushing our head voice toward our "Pinocchio placement" or mix voice so that it sounds like it was on purpose.

Abbie did so awesome today!

Here are our videos from today!

Great job Abbie! See you soon!
