Today we worked on building a character that is so big that you can't think "I will add how I would act in this situation" as a baseline for the character - you have to build it from scratch. When building a big unnatural character you have to map out how that character would move, act and react to things happening around them - and commit to every sideways glance, hand motion, and voice inflection fitting within the character that you have created, making sure it doesn't drop back down to regular size in between words, phrases, or scene changes. In order to do this we came up with a few things that would make our character more interesting - and then discussed how we could take each of those things to an extreme - shown by action or voice inflection. Big unnatural characters are important to be able to switch into as many characters in musicals are just that - huge and unnatural. We have to be able to form a full well rounded character complete with motivations, personality ticks, typical reactions, and a backstory. If we don't complete the big characters in this way they just seem hollow and buffoon-ish. Ella did awesome!
