Lily Schaeffer: When we were young (week 2)

This week:

We vocalized on:
Mah-mah, Nay-yay, Be-be, Scatting!! (hiccup scat)
We worked on:
1. Scatting
2. Widening our vowels for stylistic purposes and adding texture (continued)
3. Mapping out our song phonetically to help visualize stylistic pronunciation
4. High belt - Opening up the sound even further

Scatting
Today we started working on scatting!! We added a scat exercise to our vocalization exercises to help Lily's voice and brain with the mapping out (hearing all the little in-between notes) and execution (being able to separate all the in between notes) of her scats. Essentially, our regular voce exercises are like weight lifting - building, strengthening, and perfecting individual parts of our voice while focusing on specific ranges and amounts of pressure. While scat exercises are like cardio for our cords - forcing it to become agile enough to maneuver around very quick notes with accuracy. Lily has such great style and an awesome ear for scatting already - these exercises will help her take that awesome natural ability even further allowing her to lengthen her scats and manipulate her voice even quicker! The more we add and longer we go, the more in control she will feel!

Widening our vowels for stylistic purposes and adding texture (continued)
Today we also worked on adding texture to our low notes by changing the pronunciation of our verses to a slightly wider and "lazier" place or softer vowel sound. We have done this with our high belt placement to further open up Lily's high belt, giving it a bigger sound on top without adding unhealthy pressure to her vocal cords. We do this in our low notes to add a different dynamic to our verses - making it sound even more customized while giving Lily another trick in her bag to use to make her sound and song different than it would be with someone else singing it.

Mapping out our song phonetically to help visualize stylistic pronunciation
Today we also "mapped out Lily's song" - or wrote out how she sing her song phonetically. This helps with the visualization of our placement - giving it a very concrete and specific way of pronunciation helping Lily's brain have an even more clear way of succeeding.
Our mapped out song looks something like this:

Ehhhhhverybaaahhhhdy laaahhhhhves thahh thiiihhhhhng yew deeewww

Fraaahhm thah wahhhy yew taaaaahhhhlk

To thahhh waaaahhhhyyy yew meeewwwwwve
Ehhhhhverybaaahhhhdy heeehhhre is waaahhhhhhhtching yewwwww
Caahhhz yew feeehhhhhlll laaahhhhke haaaaaaaoome
Yaaahhhr laaahke a dreeaaahhhmm caaaahhme trew

High belt - Opening up the sound even further
Today we also worked on opening up Lily's high belt sound even more. We do this by not only widening the vowel by adding "ah" - but we take it even further, trying to make a triangular shape with our mouth. By dropping our jaw we open up the sound even more - giving Lily an even more powerful sound without adding unhealthy pressure to her cords.

Wow. She sounds SO great!!!! She worked so hard today!! I'm so proud of her!
Here are our videos from today!

Before/End of our lesson:

Great job Lily!!! You rock!!! See you soon!
