Pop Box for fast pop!
Today we worked on our "pop box" placement that we will use in all fast pop songs! This placement optimizes our forward placement for quick words and notes - taking it to a few extremes to make sure that our voice doesn't feel and sound like it's moving through molasses when we sing quickly. In order to do this, we move our voice to a more forward condensed place - making it sound a little more chipmunky than usual, we shorten our words, talk them a little bit more, and make sure to separate each word with space giving our brain time to slow down the words and hit each one - taking out the "melting together" or "molasses" feel.
Staying in the pocket/ keeping up with the music
The hardest thing about fast pop songs is making sure you don't get behind the music, or sound like you're singing too slow for the song. By using our pop box, we make sure that we can maintain the rhythm of the song with short and separated words - giving us time to add style, character, and performance techniques to the song.
Performance technique (starting for our concert)
Today we also continued working on our performance technique and started working on moving with a different kind of song. Performance posture feels like such an unnatural thing. When on stage, we need to make sure our shoulders stay down and rolled slightly back to make us look more confident and commanding of the stage. Then, from there, we add movement and choreography making sure it stays slightly above the shoulders for a bigger feel. Today we worked on choreography for one of our group numbers for our Fall concert - working on how to move our bodies when singing a pop song vs. a musical theater song. Tatum did SOOOOOO great!!!!!! Wow. This performance is going to be INCREDIBLE!!
