Today we worked on switching our new placement in our brain from something we use in voice lessons - to something we will use all the time! The transition is surprisingly hard to make because it feel so strange to the student, and includes a lot of making sure they are singing forward, bright, and correctly - and then having them listen/watch a video of it so that their brain starts to trust the way that it sounds. Once they hear how awesome it sounds, they begin to trust the sound, and feel like they can comfortably use it more and more. Because our forward placement is one that mimics talking - it is a more natural place to sing from, it just feels foriegn to the part of our brains that tell us "this is how singing feels" and "this is how singing sounds". The more we do our placement - the more our brain lets go of our "singing monsters" (the thing telling us we shouldn't sound the way we are manipulating our voice). A lot of the process of rewiring is a self evaluation process - watch our videos, talk about it, sing it again... have Hannah explain what sounds different about it and how she got there... and sing it again. She did so great!
Relaxing into our placement
The awesome thing about our 3rd voice lesson, is that the harshness of our placement becomes unnecessary. Because Hannah put in so much awesome work in the first 2 lessons - we now know the difference between how she was singing when she came in, and our new placement! Because she has felt the difference so strongly - she now can relax into it a little bit more, extend her words to a more melodic place while maintaining the forwardness of our placement, and smooth out our transitions so that it doesn't feel like we're hopping to each word! I can't wait for next week!
