Because we only have 4 lessons left until our Fall concert we are deep in our performance prep mode and getting ready to rock! To start our list of things we need to check off for our performance- we ran through each of our songs and talked about the things we wanted to make sure we covered in each song - in the next 4 weeks.
Lost boy: For lost boy, we are working hard on our advanced performance technique and being able to sing and maintain our placement while executing it.
Because performing is a weird thing (and a secondary focus for our brain), it takes a while for it to feel natural/practiced enough that can focus on anything else at all. We call practicing our performance technique and vocal placement at the same time, "bridging the gap" because as we learn them separately, we master one, then the other - and then put them together. Because we've worked so hard on our placement - Lily's brain just needs time doing both her performance movement and her vocal placement at the same time.
We will continue to work on this with me talking Lily through less and less each lesson making sure that she feels confident in her ability to execute a killer performance both movement wise and vocally!
Love Story: The things Lily decided we should focus on with Love story included our "sing and move at the same time" goal - and keeping her vocals quick with our pop box placement. We are also going to continue working on switching between the placements and making sure that Lily "stays in the pocket" of all of her songs (shortens her words, simplifies her vibrato, and switches her style so as to make sure she doesn't fall behind the music).
When we were young: For "When we were young" - we are working hard to make sure our microphone stand technique is perfect. We are also focusing on the forward and wide placement of this big ballad. Big ballads tend to get heavy and round, focusing the "big" part of the ballad tonally in the wrong direction. We are making sure Lily maintains her forward placement and adds "ah" to the middle of each of her words to make sure the vowels are wide and thin enough to sound contemporary, powerful, and easy for her to sing.
Lily did so awesome today!!!
Because we are working hard to get ready for our concert - our videos will be switching off between our regular before/after style videos and snapshot videos where you see segments of what we worked on in our lesson!
