Kate Davis: Never getting back together (week 2)

This week:

We vocalized on:
mah-mah, nay-yay

We worked on:
1. Pop box placement
2. Checklist - passing off vocals!

Pop box placement
Today we focused on our pop box placement (the placement we use when singing a fast pop song). We focused on making sure that our words were nice and short - that Kate was talking each word, and separating each syllable.

With a song like "we are never getting back together", there is a natural tendency to want to add stylistic things to enhance the song (trying to manipulate our voice to sound more sassy, or fit in more style than the song calls for). What we want to make sure of, is that we are capitalizing on the simplicity of the song and using things like emphasizing consonants and keeping our words short to stylize the song to keep it sounding commercial.

We make sure this is happening by adding the visualization of throwing our fingers forward with each syllable.

Checklist - passing off vocals!
Because our concert is getting close - we want to make sure that Kate feels 100% ready to go by the time we have our group practices. Because of this, we worked on starting the process of passing off our vocals today. We made a checklist of everything our vocals needed to have in order for them to sound perfect. Then, after we sang through it, we would go through the list, checking off the things we passed off, and circling the things we needed to work on a little bit more.
By the end of our lesson - Kate passed off our first round of vocals!

She did so awesome!
Here are our videos from today!

Before/End of our lesson:
