This week:
We have started adding bass to Olivia's lower register/ lower notes when she sings!
This week we added our 'big radio announcer voice" and "big opera voice". We gave Olivia permission to sound 100% ridiculous - having her force her voice to a place that she thinks would sound too big/too full. We widened her vowels even further and added a "musical theater box" for her to sing through.
Musical theater box:
Throughout our lessons we'll have a couple different "boxes". These are placements that act as a filter for the sounds that are coming out when we sing. Our base line (or forward) placement remains intact (along with our pop placement, musical theater placement, ect) while we squish the sound in different ways to get a more exaggerated sound. We call them boxes because we use them in particular parts of a song in the beginning of words so that the forward placement lands in slightly different places in our voice. It would be like if we were using a cookie cutter at our mouths so that the sound is shaped a certain way.
For our musical theater box - we widen our vowels.. and in Olivia's case - we box out her words and make her say them as if she were an old radio announcer. We take the sound beyond a typical musical theater placement for Olivia to feel the power and volume that she needs to - while keeping it forward so that she doesn't hurt her voice while we continue to build.
We also had Olivia use big actions to make her feel even bigger so that 1. she gets used to filling a stage.. and 2. so that the sound comes out even bigger.
