Pop Box/ Staying in the pocket - Making our placement more natural Today we continued our work on our "pop box" placement! Our pop box is one of the most difficult placements to master because it feels so unnatural. You have to re-train your brain to feel like you're singing weird for a while before it starts to feel comfortable. To help it along, we take it to a more conversational place that feels a little bit more singer-friendly, taking out some of the harshness that comes with our "hit the wall" version (or extreme version for teaching purposes) of the placement. Today, we worked on moving it to this more conversational placement - so that it feels and sounds a little bit more natural. To do this, today we worked on smoothing out the rough edges left behind when we cut words off, and sing things in an ultra bright placement (through our teeth) all the time. We worked on adding some dynamics back into our song by elongating some words, adding a little bit more style, widening a few vowels, and making our placement a little bit less staccato - without losing everything the pop box adds to our sound (brightness, quickness, better pitch). Lily did AWESOME!!
