Lily Schaeffer: Love Story (week 3)

This week:

We vocalized on:
Mah-mah, nay-yay, everybody's favorite, oh-ah
We worked on:
1. Pop Box (continued)
2. Rhythmic Performance technique
3. Switching between our pop box and our wide ballad placement/ performance technique

Pop Box (continued)
Today, we continued our work on our pop box! We worked on balancing the shortness of the words, and staying in the pocket (keeping up with the timing of the song), with the cool style we're adding and movement we've now incorporated. We are working on using our pop box placement to give us time and space to stylize even more - and to make our song much easier to sing.

Rhythmic Performance technique
Today we started working on performance technique when singing a mid- uptempo song! We started in our vocalization exercises by adding first, our big blue ball (the initial secondary focus), and then replacing it with small rhythmic dance moves and steps to help us 1. learn different moves to incorporate into our fast song, and 2. to get our bodies used to moving to the rhythm of the song while singing.
We started with side steps, heel drops and snaps, and microphone drops - each a slightly different move to keep our performance gestures varied, but not too complicated that our brain has to completely focus on something other than the song we're singing.
Then, as we continued to work on our song, we worked on maintaining our placement while adding in these moves (such a hard thing to do). It's a frustrating thing when you add something in that throws off the laser-like focus we're so used to in our difficult lessons. Lily did SOOO AWESOME!!! The more we work on these performance techniques, the more her voice and brain will be used to and confident with doing both.

Switching between our pop box and our wide ballad placement/ performance technique
In preparation for our Fall concert - we have started our "bootcamp" part of our voice lessons. Today we went between our fast pop box song (Love Story) and our stylized ballad (When we were young), making sure that Lily makes the switch from variation to variation of our baseline placement. The goal of our Fall concert is to show off every part of Lily's voice - and all the cool ways she can customize it based on song, genre, speed, and style! In order to do this, we have to train Lily's brain to change and reset into the different placements we are learning - based on the song she is singing.
This rapid-fire placement change is AWESOME conditioning for her brain and her voice!! It is making her a better singer and performer - and you can already tell!! She is doing SO great.

Here are our snapshot videos from today!
