Texturizing/ Style Today we worked on taking Lily's style to the next level. With our new song, the main focus isn't range (like "when we were young"), and isn't staying in the pocket (like "love story"). The focus is entirely on the cool things we can add to the song, and different ways we can manipulate our voice. All of these things contribute to our all over style. Lily came in with incredible style from day 1. She has fantastic instincts!! Today, we worked on taking that style - and stretching it, customizing it, and giving Lily even more control over how it sounds and how it shapes the song. We did this by first widening our vowels. By taking the concentration of tone and spreading it differently (taking a round tone that can be piercing, hard to control, and dark sounding - or a little bit guttural or back in our throat), we are able to add an ease to the sound - or make the words sound brighter, happier, a little bit more effortless, and, at times - even a little bit lazy. Then, we add breath to each word - giving it more texture, emotion, and a cool stylistic option to spice up the song even further. We worked on word pronunciation in both our high and low notes, making sure to pronounce each word to optimize for the style that Lily was going for (adding "ah" to words, cutting some words a little bit shorter, emphasizing consonants on other words and phrases - giving the song dynamics and a variety of stylistic choices that all fit in the same placement). Wow. She did so great!!!
